VIGAN CITY

Vigan City in Ilocos Sur is one of the most beautiful and historic places in the Philippines. When I visited it, I felt like I went back in time. The streets, the old houses, and the peaceful vibe make it a special place. But what made my trip more memorable were three tourist spots: Pagburnayan, the Dancing Fountain, and the Crisologo Museum.

Pagburnayan is a small pottery place where locals make jars by hand. The word “burnay” means jar in Ilocano. These jars were used long ago to store water, vinegar, or rice wine. When I went there, I saw how skilled the potters are. They use a potter’s wheel and shape the clay with their bare hands. It looks simple, but it actually takes a lot of practice. It made me appreciate our culture more because these crafts are part of our history.

Next is the Dancing Fountain located in the plaza. At night, the fountain lights up and water dances to music. It may sound simple, but it was so fun and relaxing to watch. Many families, tourists, and even locals gather around it. It’s nice to see people enjoying the show together. It’s a mix of modern entertainment in a historical place.

Plaza Salcedo is named after Juan de Salcedo, the Spanish conquistador and founder of the Spanish settlement in Vigan (then Villa Fernandina).

Historically, the plaza was part of the Spanish colonial urban plan: it served as a central open space facing the cathedral and the provincial capitol.

Lastly, I visited the Crisologo Museum. This used to be the house of Floro Crisologo, a former politician. Inside, there are old photos, books, and even the clothes and furniture they used before. One room shows where he was assassinated, and it gave me goosebumps. The museum helps us understand more about the political history of the city and the sacrifices of its leaders.

The Crisologo Museum was once the home of Floro Crisologo, a well-known politician during the 1960s. The house was turned into a museum to show the life and legacy of their family. Inside, tourists can see old furniture, books, clothes, and even the car where Floro Crisologo was shot. These items help people understand how life was during the past, especially during the Spanish and post-war periods.
